🏆 Winner Interview

Q: What’s your name and Bandai name?

A: Darren, Fylthe

Q: How long have you been competing at Tilted Gaming?

A: 4 months

Q: Would you say the Gundam Card Game is your current main TCG?

A: Yes

Q: What other TCGs do you play?

A: Pokémon, Magic, and Riftbound

Q: Are you also competing and taking those games seriously?

A: I used to play competitive Pokémon but would say I'm focused mainly on Gundam right now.

Q: What deck color(s) did you pilot today to go undefeated (4–0)?

A: Blue/White

Q: Did you come in with a plan with this deck color/tech?

A: Yeah I’ve been testing decks that counter the meta and decided to run a tempo Unicorn deck.

Q: What makes your deck different from other Blue/White decks?

A: My deck is lower to the ground with less blockers. It’s not a traditional b/w block till you can pull off the Unicorn combo.

Q: Is this color combo new and does it fit your playstyle?

A: It’s actually a spin-off of an aggro tempo B/W list that Edgar aka Skater_moon created, and I piloted to a new type challenge win last season. My playstyle is tempo, but with the new blocker heavy deck I needed a way to win late game. That's how I ended up adding the Unicorn package.

Q: You are now tied for 1st on our seasonal leaderboard with Jeff — thoughts?

A: Jeff is actually part of my testing group. Mad respect for him. We’ll see if I can pull ahead next week.

“Also shout out to the rest of the testing crew, y’all know who you are!”

Q: With the new season of Newtype Challenges out, are you getting reps in?

A: I’m typically at the shop looking to get reps in or theory deck. I’m also on wingtable a lot when I want to get specific match up testing done. I’m looking to play in a couple Newtypes this season so hopefully this win translates.

Q: Have you participated in any Newtype Challenges this season?

A: None so far this season. The only one I’ve played in was the last one in season 1.

Q: What was your toughest matchup today?

A: My toughest matchup was actually against Jeff on one-year war. He was able to get off to a hot start but luckily I was able to stabilize and send him into top deck mode.

Q: What unit, link, or pair gained you the most advantage?

A: The Unicorn package was definitely the MVP today. It basically nullifies the high end blocker meta and lets you swing on any unit in order to get favorable trades.

Q: What are your thoughts on the current meta and how it affects locals?

A: I’m actually not a fan of the meta right now. It’s really blocker heavy with the addition of Rick Dias. Many decks, especially locally, are looking to run around 12+ early game blockers. The only difference is their choice of late game pay off: Zero, Epyon, Sinanju/Quebeley

Q: Thoughts on GCG with only two sets out, and expectations for Set 3?

A: The first 2 sets overall were a good foundation. I think the biggest mistake was adding Rick Dias prior to fleshing out more archetypes. I think set 3 is looking good so far. I hope we can get back to more of a circular meta like season 1. In my opinion, the game is most fun when there are a variety of top tier decks.

Q: Advice for new players wanting to start competing in GCG?

A: I would say find a spot and people you feel comfortable to grind games at/with. Innovation comes from messing around with your friends. I would also say figure out your playstyle and find a way to make it work with what you find fun.

Q: Any shoutouts?

A: Tovar, aka Rampage_Seeker, who is also part of my testing group, was my finals opponent and he honestly played really well. He’s been on Zaft from day 1 of release so I’m glad to see that his loyalty to the archetype is paying off. Also shout out to the rest of the testing crew, y’all know who you are!
